Early Childhood Development (636) Associate of Applied Science Degree

Purpose: This degree is designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to work in early childhood education programs. Virginia Peninsula Community College’s (VPCC) early childhood program provides fundamentals of child development and educational training for those entering the early childhood field. Our program offers a hands-on, research-based curriculum to prepare students in the care, supervision and education of children from birth through age 8.

The program brings classroom theory and practical experiences together. Students will be placed in a coordinated internship in an appropriate school or childcare center to gain supervised field experience.

Articulation: Old Dominion University and Longwood University offer a guaranteed admission program for students in the AAS program who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education.  Details on these agreements can be found here: Transfer Programs.  Additionally, the Transfer Virginia portal provides transfer guides for Early Childhood Education.

Students who are interested in transferring into a bachelor’s program in Early Childhood Education, should meet with Academic Advising early to determine options and discuss requirements.

Funding sources can be found on the Early Childhood Development webpage.
