Social Science (882), Associate of Science Degree


Purpose: This degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. By guiding students to an appreciation of many different fields of knowledge, the Social Science program attempts to educate the whole person and to increase students’ awareness of themselves, their fellow men and women, and the world around them. Social Science graduates become teachers, economists, psychologists, social workers, political scientists, archeologists, government workers, museum guides, and researchers, among many other types of professionals.

1Requirements from credits in social sciences must come from courses having three different prefixes from the following: ECO, GEO, PLS, PSY, or SOC. In selecting transfer courses, students should consult the catalog of their intended transfer institution and major.

4 Students are strongly encouraged to complete a world language, such as Spanish, through the 202-level. All public colleges and universities in Virginia require world language in some majors and a few require a world language for all majors. Students should consult the catalog of their intended transfer institution and major. Students who studied a world language in high school are encouraged to take the placement test and may be able to skip one or more language courses.
