Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant (221-480-30) Career Studies Certificate for Students Attending Part-Time


Purpose: This career studies certificate is designed to provide substance abuse specific content and practical experiences for students who desire to work in local substance abuse organizations. This curriculum is comprised of courses in general education, counseling skills, ethics, cultural diversity, group dynamics, case management, and a human services internship. This career studies certificate falls under the Associates of Applied Science in Human Services Program.

Educational or Occupational Objectives: This career certificate provides the curriculum and 100 hours of practical experiences that meet the Virginia Board of Counseling educational requirement component for a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant. This program provides a pathway for students to explore careers in substance abuse agencies, mental health organizations, and rehabilitation facilities. Industry professionals can use the knowledge and experiences gained from this career certificate to enhance marketability, comply with state regulations, and continue studies in the Human Services Program.

Upon successful completion of the 28 course hours, students will have met the requirement to fulfill the Human Services Substance Abuse Career Studies Certificate the college.  The Virginia Board of Counseling has approved these courses as meeting their educational requirements for Substance Abuse Counseling Assistants. Please see the Virginia Board of Counseling CSAC Regulations for additional details. As far as to state certification, other components must be fulfilled, and the Board of Counseling will determine if you have met all requirements. Thomas Nelson Community College does not grant certifications as Substance Abuse Counselor Assistants.
