Professional Nursing-Registered Nurse (156) Associate of Applied Science Degree

Purpose: The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) program in Professional Nursing is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills required for entry-level registered nurses. Students who successfully complete program requirements and attain licensure as registered nurses are prepared to enter the workforce as members of the healthcare team in physician’s offices, clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and mental health facilities. While designed to prepare graduates for immediate entry into the workforce, the program is articulated with select four-year institutions to benefit those seeking baccalaureate-level study in the field. 

Admission Requirements: The Professional Nursing program requires that prospective students complete the Nursing CAS application process, which can be accessed by visiting the College’s Nursing Education Program Admission Requirements webpage. 

Financial Requirements: In addition to college tuition, fees, and course textbooks, the Professional Nursing program has additional costs for which students will be responsible. Costs may include but are not limited to criminal background check and drug screen, medical examination, immunization/titers, CPR certification, uniforms, instruments and supplies, transportation to and from clinical sites, testing resources, and certification and licensure fees. Contact the Health Professions advising office for additional information. 

Accreditation: The program is fully approved by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing. The program is also accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326 (www.acenursing.org).

Note: Professional Nursing program promotion policy requires that students complete BIO 141 BIO 142 BIO 150 , MTH 154 ENG 111 , ENG 112 , and PHI 220  with a grade of “B” or higher. 

Articulation Agreement: Students who are interested in transferring to Old Dominion University to continue the Nursing  or Nursing to Health Sciences  plan should meet with Academic Advising early to determine and discuss requirements.
