Purpose: The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Fire Science Technology is designed to prepare individuals for entry or advancement in fire and emergency services and/or a related field (fire administrators, fire inspectors and/or investigators, fire training coordinators, safety directors, state training coordinators, municipal department administrators, fire insurance appraisers, and fire equipment salespersons) by providing them with knowledge of the fire protection and suppression profession and giving them the general education necessary to function and advance in one of these professions. The program has been structured for students desiring to enter and/or advance in fire protection service careers and/or volunteer agencies. While designed to prepare graduates for immediate entry into or continued advancement in fire and emergency services related fields, Virginia Peninsula has articulation agreements that facilitate the articulation/transfer of this and other career-oriented programs to selected four-year institutions to benefit those seeking baccalaureate-level study in the field. Students interested in articulation/transfer should contact an academic advisor or the department chair early in their program.
FESHE Designation: The Virginia Peninsula Community College Fire Science Program is recognized as a United States Fire Administration - National Fire Academy Fire a
nd Emergency Services Higher Education program. The Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Recognition certificate is an acknowledgement that a collegiate emergency services degree program meets the minimum standards of excellence established by FESHE professional development committees and the National Fire Academy (NFA). This designation is designed to offer national recognition to students participating in the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model core associate degree courses and promotes the standardization of fire science course titles, descriptions, and outcomes across the nation. Students successfully completing FESHE core courses receive an NFA certificate of completion for each FESHE course.
Credit for Prior Learning: Students in the Fire Science program may be eligible to receive credit for prior learning and/or industry certifications. See an academic advisor or the department head for further information.
Admission Requirements: There are no admission requirements beyond admission to the College for this program.
Employment Requirements: Employment in fire-rescue service and fire protection agencies may have specific physical requirements such as height, weight, eyesight and/or physical dexterity and ability. Employment also typically requires acceptable criminal background check and drug screening. Students are encouraged to make an appointment with the program head to discuss any potential concerns.
Articulation Agreement: Students who are interested in transferring to Old Dominion University to continue the Fire Science to Health Sciences: Health Services Administration Professional plan should meet with Academic Advising early to determine and discuss requirements.
