Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant (221-480-30) Career Studies Certificate


Purpose: This career studies certificate is designed to provide substance abuse specific content and practical experiences for students who desire to work in local substance abuse organizations. This curriculum is comprised of courses in general education, counseling skills, ethics, cultural diversity, group dynamics, case management, and a human services internship. This career studies certificate falls under the Associates of Applied Science in Human Services Program.

Educational or Occupational Objectives: This career certificate provides the curriculum and practical experiences that meet the Virginia Department of Health Professions educational requirement component for a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant. This program provides a pathway for students to explore careers in substance abuse agencies, mental health organizations, and rehabilitation facilities. Industry professionals can use the knowledge and experiences gained from this career certificate to enhance marketability, comply with state regulations, and continue studies in the Human Services Program.
