Purpose: This curriculum prepares students to assume entry level leadership and supervisory roles within Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) departments and/or agencies with an introduction to the current and future leadership roles and responsibilities within the Fire and EMS in the field. It is designed to meet the requirements for entry level Fire and EMS supervisors (officers) and to provide transferable courses into the associate of Fire Science and EMS applied science degree programs where more in-depth knowledge is acquired.
FESHE Designation: The Thomas Nelson Community College Fire Science Program is recognized as a United States Fire Administration – National Fire Academy Fire and 
Emergency Services Higher Education program. The Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Recognition certificate is an acknowledgement that a collegiate emergency services degree program meets the minimum standards of excellence established by FESHE professional development committees and the National Fire Academy (NFA). This designation is designed to offer national recognition to students participating in the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model core associate degree courses and promotes the standardization of fire science course titles, descriptions, and outcomes across the nation. Students successfully completing FESHE core courses receive an NFA certificate of completion for each FESHE course. This certificate program includes courses that are transferable into the Fire Science Technology associate degree program
Credit for Prior Learning: Students in the Fire Science program may be eligible to receive credit for prior learning and/or industry certifications. See an academic advisor or the department chair for further information.
Admission Requirements: There are no admission requirements beyond admission to the College for this program.
Employment Requirements: Employment in fire-rescue service and fire protection agencies may have specific physical requirements such as height, weight, eyesight and/or physical dexterity and ability. Employment also typically requires acceptable criminal background check and drug screening. Students are encouraged to make an appointment with program head to discuss any potential concerns.
